Welcome, New Families!

If you're here, you're in the right spot. We offer programs for boys and girls at the youth level as well as high school–aged players. Lacrosse is the fastest-growing youth sport in the country — and most kids here haven't played before, so your child is not at a disadvantage.

A lot of players have only picked up a stick in the last year or two. Our volunteer coaches are eager to teach the sport to beginners and have a passion for growing the game.

Check out one of our free TryLAX intro clinics — they're posted on our calendar when available. You can also browse information on our site or email us with any questions.

Age Group Guidelines (Boys Stick Selection)

PK – 2nd Developmental — Color and appeal matter most. A starter set (stick, bag, goggle) is a popular option.
3rd – 4th Begin looking at stick quality. Mid-range sticks offer good durability and performance.
5th – 6th More investment makes sense. Look at position-specific sticks and mesh.
7th – 12th Higher-end gear appropriate. Consult with coaches on position-specific recommendations.
USA Lacrosse Resources: USA Lacrosse provides PDF guides on girls' and boys' youth lacrosse rules. These are great resources for parents and players wanting to learn the game. Links available on request — email info@FlemingIslandLacrosse.com
FILC follows USA Lacrosse rules for youth girls (PK–8) — helmets are optional and up to individual players and families. The FHSAA has mandated helmets for high school girls' play, but USA Lacrosse has not required them at the youth level. We are insured by and follow USA Lacrosse guidelines.
Absolutely! No prior experience is required. Most players in our program are beginners or relative newcomers to the sport. Our coaches love introducing new players to lacrosse, and your child will not be at a disadvantage. We also offer free TryLAX intro clinics.
Practices are held at Thunderbolt Park located at 5700 US-17, Fleming Island, FL 32003 (next to the Fleming Island Library). Boys' Youth (PK–8) Spring Program games are played at Julington Creek Plantation Park on Saturdays (3060 Racetrack Rd., St. Johns, FL 32259). Girls Youth (PK–2) play days are also held there. Girls grades 3–8 play on Sunday afternoons in St. Johns County. Fall Lightning League games are played on Sundays at 2850 Hodges Blvd, Jacksonville (registration handled directly at lightninglacrosseleague.com).
Boys are required to have a stick, a protective helmet, a mouthpiece (color must be highly visible), gloves, shoulder pads, and elbow pads. Protective cups are strongly recommended and often required. Cleats are preferred but not required.

Girls equipment includes a stick (different from boys' — see age group details below), a mouthpiece (must be a readily visible color, NOT clear or white), and protective eyewear (must meet ASTM standard F3077). Cleats are preferred but not required. If a player has braces or permanent retainers, a customized mouth guard made by an orthodontist/dentist may be necessary — allow 3–4 weeks for this process.
Developmental (PK–2nd grade): There is little need to spend a lot of money on a stick in this bracket. Color and appeal are common reasons a player chooses a stick. A starter set (stick, bag, and goggle) is a popular option, typically costing $70–80. Consider the weight and length appropriate for the player.

3rd–4th grade: Players commonly continue with developmental-level sticks. Some players begin to recognize which sticks help them catch, throw, or shoot more easily.

5th–6th grade: 5th grade is a common time to move up in stick. The "next level" can easily be purchased for $60–80.

7th–8th grade: Weight and shaft diameter are likely to increase. Strings should be flexible and allow for a pocket. 8th graders commonly upgrade to a stick they will use in high school.
It can be difficult to wear glasses under a lacrosse helmet, and there is risk of damage to glasses or the player's eyes if they break. Prescription sports goggles are preferred by most players if contact lenses are not an option.

Two products our players have had good success with: (1) Bangerz HS-OTG Goggles — specifically designed to fit over glasses and offer good visibility (available on Amazon). (2) STX 4Sight Pro Goggles — ASTM F3077 approved; tend to work for some players with small-to-medium frames but try them on first.
Yes! Payment plans are available on request. Contact info@FlemingIslandLacrosse.com for more information. Youth program fees are on a sliding scale that increases by age group due to league and referee costs. Uniforms are an additional cost but are generally used for multiple seasons. Boys' protective gear is available for rental during registration.
Boys CO-ED & Boys teams (ages 5–15) play in the North Florida Youth Lacrosse League (NFYLL) on Saturdays. Girls teams (grades 3–8) play in the Northeast Florida Girls Youth Lacrosse League (NEFGYLL) on Sunday afternoons. Games begin mid-March and end mid-May for boys. Girls games begin late February and end late April. FILC is governed by and insured through USA Lacrosse.

Registration fees are on a sliding scale based on age group, due to league and referee costs. An annual USA Lacrosse membership ($15–$35 depending on age) is also required. Uniforms are an additional cost but are generally used for multiple seasons. Contact us for current season pricing.
FILC is part of the Northeast Florida Girls' Youth Lacrosse League (NEFGYLL) for girls and the North Florida Youth Lacrosse League (NFYLL) for boys. We are governed by and insured through USA Lacrosse. While the FHSAA has mandated helmets in high school, USA Lacrosse has not done so for youth divisions — we follow USA Lacrosse rules.

FILC is run entirely by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about growing the sport of lacrosse in Northeast Florida. Our board members are parents, coaches, and community members committed to providing a positive experience for every athlete.
